Phew…

…says Imshin. I agree:

The horror of the facts on the ground is one thing, and Jimmy Carter’s response to them is quite another. The former president is hard to read without taking into account the southern US context. A partial explanation for his see-and-hear-no-evil view of the world can be found in southern guilt over the maltreatment of blacks. Carter’s chief of staff, Hamilton Jordan, heard his first briefing on the Middle East in 1977 and offered, “I get it: the Palestinians are the niggers.”

Those that fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it. But so are those who do learn it well!

The difference, however, is that those who do learn it well will get the opportunity to chose to repeat the successful episodes rather than the only ones they know (example: to progressives f/k/a liberals, every war is Viet Nam and by their actions they will effectively succeed in turning every war into another Viet Nam - but if they were better with their history, they could perhaps pick a war that we won as the pattern to follow).
