Gore’s explanation is that he is “trying to cut down on use” (even though his use is going up rather than down) and that he buys “carbon offsets” for his private jet use (i.e. he is rich and can buy indulgences for his sins, while us peons are supposed to actually severely impact our lives).

I was in a more forgiving mind before hearing him come out and say they’re “planning” a big renovation project for energy efficiency. That’s just a knee-jerk “we’ve been caught with our hand in the cookie jar – quick, deny everything and spin it!”

If he had half a brain, he would have come out and said “yes, it’s a very large facility that partly serves as my family’s home. However, it also provides full-time employment for more than a dozen people – so it is, in that fashion, more like a business than a standard single-family dwelling.”

Tearing down the story is the last thing I want to do. All I want is when someone is accusing someone else of something ugly, be they left, right or whatever, they back this accusation with something more than just hearsay. That way we don’t give our opponents an easy weapon with which to attack the story. That goes both for you and your source.
